What to do with a foreign exchange student?

So I’m hosting a foreign exchange student and I don’t know what we should do during the day with only a couple of hours to work with. Help!

I was a foreign exchange student not too many months ago, and I would have to say the best thing to do with them is spend simple, everyday life with them. Introduce them to YOUR world; if you like skateboarding, invite them along with you; if you read, show them the new book you just got. Probably the worst thing to do is to try to conform your life to what they are used to. One, you won’t be able to keep up with it because it is not your lifestyle, and two, that is not what they came to experience.

Of course they want to see the sights also, but if they are staying with you for a good amount of time, don’t rush out and take them all at once. Really what they want, and what they came for, is to see everyday life. Of course, you don’t want to leave them in their room all day, but you do not want to treat them like a visitor either, taking them out everywhere.

Find common interests; such as what food they like, or what music they like. Then next time you want to do something with them you can go out and grab a bite to eat of their favorite food, or stop by a music store to check out the latest cds. Therefore you are doing something for them, but without sacrificing so much on your part. I mean, for me, it was these little things that made me feel welcomed (yet still like a member of the family) and they are the things that I will always remember.

How can an increase in Foreign Exchange Reserves help cushion the effect of inflation to citizens?

We were assigned to analyze a news article and mine is about the Philippine government's measures vs. inflation and selling its remaining Petron shares is one of their measures. It was said that this will help increase Foreign Exchange Reserves. Now, I'm wondering how this can help reducing the effects of inflation.

A central's bank sale of domestic currency to buy foreign assets in the foreign exchange market results in an increase of the monetary base.
The increase in the money supply will lead to a higher real money supply in the short run which will cause the interest rate on domestic currency assets to fall shifting the demand curve to the left.
When the demand curve shifts to the left prices go down to reach a new lower equilibrium level.

Im alreadi planning on using AFS and im hopefulli going to Japan. I dont realli know how the whole process goes. Stupid question: because its a foreign EXCHANGE does that mean a kid comes and lives in my house? Cause my parents dont want that.

No. It is not necessarily an exchange. Many foreign exchange programs are really not an exchange at all. The only exchange that takes place is the exchange of knowledge and culture among you and your host country and family. I was an exchange student in Aug 06 in Ireland and I used CCI (Center for Cultural Interchange). It was a great experience and I think its great that you are wanting to go to Japan. My family and I have also hosted exchange students for the past 5 years, but this was not because I went to Ireland. We just enjoy welcoming students into our home and learning about other cultures.

Nowadays there are not many programs that require you to literally exchange lives with someone. Sometimes high schools set up this sort of exchange and you live with someone abroad, and then later they live with you but this is not what you are talking about with AFS. Just do your research and plan ahead. It costs alot to be an exchange student so look into different programs. But its worth it!

What would be a good present for a German foreign exchange family?

I'm participating in a foreign exchange program this summer but I have no idea what to give my exchange family! When my exchange partner came he brought us chocolates, gummi bears, and a book about the Black Forest. I'd like to give them something that represents the Mexican culture and that I'm able to pass through customs.

My exchange partner says his family really enjoy traveling and other cultures, however, I'm not sure what would be something they'd like.

You really have the right idea.

You want to bring them something that represents your home area, or, as you say, something that represents your culture.

I would suggest something handmade in your area…Where are you? If you are someplace where you can easily buy Mexican ceramics, that sort of covers it all…something they can display on a wall or a table in the living or dining room. Host families love those sorts of things. Someone once suggested tee shirts or sweatshirts from a big university or a local one. They HAVE tee shirts in Europe, but ones that represent things that they recognize, but don't likely have easy access to are really good. I would try a local craft shop (the kind that sells things made by locals) That's another good place to start. Books about the region might be good, too, as they brought you one from the Black Forest.

What's the best way to become a host for a foreign exchange student?

I'm a single male, no spouse or children, who lives in St. Paul, Minnesota. I own a house and have an extra room. What's the best agency to use to become a foreign exchange student host? How long is this usually for? Do any agencies offer financial help for food, etc.? Have any other single people done this before?

I was a single Mom with a 13 year old hosting an Italian exchange student. What a lot of people don't realize is that they're all in your city together, so there was like 50 "kids" who all end up at one house or another(even though they have been placed in different homes,they almost always want to spend the night together) I personally welcomed them crashing here because my guy was only 15. But when you do this you have to realize they llive differently and you have to kind of respect that. Like in Italy they don't eat until like 10:00 pm then they go out, then they go out for coffee and get home around 4:00 But it was SO worth it, I love my Nicola, and Fabrizio, and AnnaNicola (the pretty one) And keep in touch with them, so yes do it It will be really rewarding but also be prepared for lots of driving and please be patient!
